The Midnight Mischief
Halloween night at Candy Jail was supposed to be quiet.
The Warden had locked up the candy kitchen, counted every caramel, and warned the inmates that nobody was allowed near the seasonal stash until morning.
Pumpkin Spice Perp nodded very seriously.
At exactly midnight, the halls filled with the smell of cinnamon, nutmeg, and something suspiciously sweet.
Watermelon Mayhem woke up first.
“Do you smell that?”
Jailhouse Java sat straight up.
“Pumpkin.”
Campfire Convict sniffed the air.
“Spice.”
Banana Bandit grinned.
“Crime.”
They followed the smell down the hallway and found Pumpkin Spice Perp standing beside the open candy cupboard holding a tray of freshly made pumpkin spice treats.
The Warden appeared behind him.
“Care to explain?”
Pumpkin Spice Perp looked at the tray. Then at the Warden. Then back at the tray.
“Seasonal emergency.”
The Warden tried very hard not to laugh. She failed.
Five minutes later, the whole gang was sitting together in the yard, eating pumpkin spice candy under the Halloween lights.
Pumpkin Spice Perp leaned back proudly.
Some crimes, he decided, were worth the sentence.
